Advanced Throwing (7th/8t/9th/12th DECEMBER 2026)
Take your throwing skills to the next level in this intensive four-day course designed for potters who are already comfortable on the wheel and want to build confidence working with larger amounts of clay and larger forms.
The course is taught by Vaughan Smithson, who has been throwing on the potter’s wheel since 2015. With a strong focus on experimentation, form and working at scale, Vaughan will guide you through the techniques needed to confidently throw, shape, trim and glaze larger vessels.
Monday | 9am–1pm — Cylinders & Vases
Start by working with larger amounts of clay, focusing on preparing clay, advanced centering techniques and building height. You’ll explore throwing strong, even cylinders before transforming them into larger shaped vases.
Tuesday | 9am–1pm — Bowls & Plates
Refresh and refine your centering techniques before moving into larger, wider forms. Learn how to successfully throw larger bowls and plates while maintaining even walls, stability and proportion.
Wednesday | 9am–1pm — Trimming Larger Forms
Develop your trimming skills by refining the pieces created on Monday and Tuesday. We’ll cover techniques for trimming larger vessels, refining foot rings and creating clean, balanced finished forms.
Saturday | 3pm–6pm — Glazing Larger Vessels
Finish your work with a focus on glazing larger forms using spraying techniques. Learn how to achieve an even glaze application, layer colours and confidently glaze larger vessels.
What’s included:
All clay and materials
Glazes
Firing of two large pieces
Four days of expert tuition
This course is ideal for potters who can comfortably center clay, looking to push beyond smaller forms and develop the skills and confidence needed to throw and finish larger vessels. ( please note you will be able to keep your other greenware pieces if you like, we will just be glazing two)
